I saw a TV commerical this weekend by IBM that asks a very important question about social networking Are you doing it because everyone else is? Or are you social networking with a specific business purpose in mind for your recruitment efforts?

Something to think about as you are connecting with all those “friends” of yours out there in Cyberspace. :)

Here’s a list of Social Networking sites! Review them with a recruiter’s eye.

Well, if you are fan of fine shoes, you have probably heard of Zappos, an online retailer of footwear. It was a pleasure last week to have a chance to speak to Christa Foley (@electra), Recruiting Manager for Zappos, about how her team is using Twitter to connect with job seekers.

If you take a look at the Zappos home page you’ll see that they are actively linking to Twitter encouraging Zappos customers to connect with Zappos employees.

What happens next is really the beauty of using a tool like Twitter. The more people “following” Zappos employees the larger an audience to market career opportunities and Zappos products. For example, Southwest Airline (@southwestair) has a strong presence on Twitter with over 1,500 “Followers”, customers interact with Southwest this way everyday. It can’t help but build a better connection between employer, customer and potential employee.

Christa has experienced success in hiring candidates from Twitter connections saying ” A hire from Twitter is a nice bonus and we actively cultivate that relationship. It allows us get the word out that Zappos is a really great place to work and we interact with them in a way that brings the Zappos story to life.” Zappos has over 400 employees actively using Twitter as a customer service and recruitment tool. They have created a Zappos Twitter Page. The Zappos HR team even incorporates Twitter into new hire orientation.

Adding Web 2.0 tools to the recruiting mix can only lead to a more positive recruiting experience for the candidate and the recruiter. Zappos has wrapped it’s arms around it and welcomed it into their process. It’s exciting to see a company like Zappos taking a chance to find a way to incorporate Web 2.0 tools into their recruitment process. Hats of to Zappos!

If you had any doubt that the world of Recruiting and Human Resources is changing right before our eyes, check out this 60 Minutes report. Understanding how to communicate with all the generations that make up our workforce is going to be challenging and very exciting. The organizations that grab a hold of this message and run with it are those that will come out on top.

As you are watching this video think of how your organization is communicating your employment brand, career opportunities, benefits and perks to all the generations that make up your workforce and your talent pools using the tools that they use in their everyday lives. A “one size fits all” approach probably does not work anymore. You already know this but how many companies out there are putting these practices into action?

I think many of us are in a form of denial that these changes are happening, take a closer look.
